NIAT is an industry-aligned upskilling program that delivers industry-oriented and practical learning, in parallel with a B.Tech degree from its collaborating universities. NIAT works with more than 30 collaborating universities across India and helps students pursue a B.Tech degree from a UGC-approved, AICTE-approved university while simultaneously getting trained and certified by NIAT.
Founded by IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and IIIT Hyderabad alumni, NIAT was created to reduce the academia-industry gap. The entry is via the NxtWave Assessment Test (NAT). The program is project-driven, with mentors coming from industry, and starts practical training from year one. High-demand topics like AI, Robotics, Data Science and DevOps are taught and developed after inputs from over 2,500 companies in the network.
What Makes NIAT Different?
In typical engineering programs, technology experience is pushed out until the student’s final year and internships. NIAT, on the other hand, has students designing and building systems starting on day one of the program. Students are learning by application in lab work rather than by listening to lectures. Courses and Technologies Covered at NIAT
The course structure at NIAT is designed around a set of technologically oriented domains that are experiencing high demand. Students learn AI and Machine Learning, which provides them with a fundamental understanding of the system’s workings, while the practical application is learned through developing various projects. In addition, students are exposed to Robotics and Physical AI, which is concerned with systems of automation, robots, and flying devices; working with datasets to develop data-driven and problem-solving skills within Data Science modules; learning DevOps and Software Development based around software engineering.
NIAT Enrollment Process 2026
Enrollment takes place through the NxtWave Assessment Test (NAT). Unlike conventional entrance tests focused on rote learning, NAT assesses aptitude, analytical thinking, and application-based skills. After completing the application and paying a fee of Rs. 1,200, candidates sit a 90-minute test covering logical reasoning, aptitude, and cognition.
Successful candidates are then offered an individual career counselling session where their interests and preferences are taken into account before a collaborating university from the NxtWave network is suggested. Once admission to NIAT is initiated, candidates can begin the university admission process. Applications are accepted online through the NIAT website. Final admission is subject to the collaborating university’s own eligibility requirements. The minimum eligibility for the NxtWave Assessment Test is 10+2 with 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from a recognised board.
NIAT Fees Structure 2026
The fee structure varies depending on the collaborating university and campus selected. Since the program operates through multiple collaborating universities across India, there is no single fee applicable to all students. Prospective applicants are advised to verify the exact tuition fees for their chosen campus, understand hostel and additional charges separately, and compare facilities and support services across universities before making a final decision.
Scholarships at NIAT
NIAT offers scholarship opportunities to eligible students, primarily based on NAT performance. The scholarship amount varies depending on the candidate’s score, applicable admission criteria, and the policies of the collaborating university. These scholarships are intended to reduce the overall financial burden and make industry-focused education more accessible to deserving students.
Student Life with NIAT
Student life at NIAT is highly structured and more intense academically than at a traditional engineering college. They work on real-world projects instead of solely focusing on theoretical tasks. The applications are created in AI, software development and robotics, depending on the field the students specialise in. Mentors from industries such as Google, Amazon and Meta also pay frequent visits.
Student learning is supervised through a structured process of assessments, continuous assignments, tracking skill levels and time slots of learning, which may sometimes prove hectic for a person not comfortable with constant practice and coding. The institution also has a systematic student feedback system in place. They rate each class and send in feedback after each lecture to maintain a closed feedback loop.
